Values Without a Built-In North

How can an AI decision be justified when important values conflict and no neutral formula settles the choice?

The continuing-education provider and every situation are fictional. The article claims no observed learning effect and grants no legal or deployment approval.

The central question

Which meaning must every version preserve, where may an explanation adapt, who can detect a shift—and what feedback would change the decision?

Three legitimate reasons in tension

01

Preserve meaning

A shared reference helps comparison and version control; it does not guarantee equal understanding.

02

Support access

Adapted explanations may support access; without appropriate review, an effect is not established.

03

Limit effort

Small teams need clear review boundaries. Human translation without AI remains a real option; its effort is case-specific.

Three options to examine

A shared reference version

Keep a reviewed source text as the reference. Limit: one source does not mean equal access.

An AI-supported explanatory draft

Use only as a labelled draft; a qualified reviewer checks meaning, conditions, and limitations before use.

Translation without AI

Human translation or editorial revision remains in scope. Time, quality, and resources need case-specific review.

Models change the reasoning path

F · Expand the question

A clarifies terms and assumptions; B develops competing hypotheses; D processes counter-questions; C states the revised final question. QFT is not applied in this article.

K · Consult

The basic cycle has four steps: exploration → reflection/analysis → decision/recommendation → feedback/evaluation. Dissent and feedback can change the option.

R · Specialist advice

The separate advisory model is only a possible handoff for a concrete legal, contractual, or specialist question. It does not decide the team’s value judgement.

A 90-minute exercise

0–20Clarify terms and build a question card
20–35Examine two perspectives and the non-AI option
35–65Consult roles, boundaries, and the counter-position
65–80Record a provisional recommendation and appeal route
80–90Set a feedback and revision trigger

The strongest counter-position

Limited resources require priorities. A values process can delay action or hide the status quo. The team therefore needs bounded review, clear responsibility, and a revision trigger—not pretended certainty.
